What To Do When You Sense You Have Trouble With Termites

Understand The Warning Signs

The problem with identifying termites is that you typically do not see the termites themselves. Instead, you will see signs that they've infested your home. This includes wooden sections of your house that have tiny holes, which are a clear indication that termites have burrowed their way inside. You can identify hollow wood by knocking on the surface and comparing different pieces of wood. If the wood sounds hollow in the middle, chances are that termites have found a way inside the wood and caused a lot of damage. You may also see sawdust around pieces of wood that have been infested with termites.

When in doubt, contact an exterminator to inspect the wood and verify any suspicions that you have. They may discover that the problem isn't termites, but something else like carpenter ants. This will help determine the technique that needs to be used to exterminate the pest.

While there are many DIY techniques you could try to remove those termites from your house, your best bet is to reach out to a local exterminator for assistance. They will kill the termites by using pesticides that are stronger than anything you can buy at your local home improvement store.

Two techniques they may use involve termite bait or termiticides. The bait is placed in the ground around your home, and the goal is to trick termites into feeding on it and kill them off. The termiticide is a liquid that is designed to repel termites and prevent them from getting into your home.

Prevent Future Termite Infestations

There are a few ways you can prevent termites from coming back. Start by removing any wood around your home that could attract the pests, such as firewood near a door. You can also fix problems with moisture in your home, such as fixing leaking pipes and using a dehumidifier. You'll also want to periodically inspect the wood for termite damage to ensure that the termites have not returned.
