How You Can Spot A Termite Infestation: Signs To Look For

by Lance Burke

Termites can be a big problem for any homeowner. They can be difficult to spot if you aren't sure what you're looking for, and if you spot the insect itself, it may be too late. You may already have an infestation on your hands. A termite infestation can be a disaster for your house, as termites can do a lot of damage to the wood in and around your house. To help you spot a termite infestation read on for some signs to look for.

What Termites Look Like

Termites can sometimes be mistaken for other insects. They look very similar to flying ants, but termites have hourglass bodies and wings that are the exact same size. Termites can also be wingless. They are usually white or brown in color. You may spot them flying around or crawling near the entrance to their nest.

Where To Look For Termites

Termites eat through wood and some will build their nests inside the wood. If you spot long mud trenches along your home's foundation, it could be due to termites. Wavy lines along the wood in your home, it may also be caused by termites. Look around your home's foundation and along the woodwork around your home, such as the trim around your door and windows. Other wood trim work around your home may also be affected.

What Signs To Look For

Termites will leave holes in the wood they are using for food. Look for these small holes as well as pellets they may be leaving behind. Mud tunnels are another sign to look out for. You can spot these around the exterior of your home along the foundation or right where the foundation meets the house. Dry termites will eat through other things besides wood. Take a look around your house both inside and outside to see if anything looks chewed up or if there are holes elsewhere around your home. These termites can be housing themselves in the walls of your home.

If you suspect you have termites in your home, whether you've spotted them or spotted some of the signs above, call a termite control service to inspect your home professionally. They have the know-how and tools to get rid of these pests and prevent them from returning. Don't attempt to get rid of these pests on your own, because your home may require more than setting a few traps or it may need to be fumigated.
