Preventing Winter Pests: What You Can Do

by Lance Burke

You may think you're safe from pests in the winter, but you couldn't be more wrong. Winter is when pests are going to look for warmth, water, and food. If you aren't careful, you could end up with a house full of pests and an infestation. To help prevent pests this winter, read on for a few tips to help you, as well as tips to help get rid of unwanted pests.

Keep Your Home Clean

Just like in those warmer weather months, you need to keep your floors and counters free of crumbs and other leftover food particles. They may seem like tiny crumbs, but it can be enough to feed ants, roaches, and even mice. Wipe down your counters and sweep your floors with a broom daily. Wipe up spills and clean up after preparing meals or eating. Even water can be attractive to pests, so clean this up as well.

Repair Leaky Faucets And Pipes

Again, water is an attractant to pests, so if your faucets or pipes are leaking, you need to make these repairs. Ants, roaches, and mice may be found in areas where you have a leak, so if you've spotted an issue, make the repair yourself or hire someone to make this repair for you. Don't ignore a problem like this in your home.

Clean Up Outside Trash

Trash or debris outside of your home is a good place for pests to hide or nest in. If this buildup is too close to your home, those pests are going to make their way into your home before long. Move your outside garbage cans further away from your home and clean up other debris outside such as wood piles, compost piles, or other piles. This can attract raccoons or even cockroaches, neither of which you would want in your house.

Bring In Pet Food From Outside

If you keep your pet's food outside, bring them inside or place them in an airtight container. If you keep these bags of food outside or in your garage, mice and other pests can get inside easily and get a free meal from you. Other pet foods such as bird seed and even grass seed can attract mice, moles, squirrels, chipmunks, and other pests. Place all of these in airtight containers.

If you have pests in your home, get rid of them by setting traps, cleaning your home often, and making repairs around your home to keep these pests out. If you have an infestation, call a professional pest control company like E & R Exterminating Company, Inc. today.
