It's Time To Prepare: How To Keep Pests Away Once Spring Arrives

by Lance Burke

Winter may be in full-force right now, but spring will be here in just a few short months. When it arrives, the pests will start to move around again. If you haven't taken steps to prepare, you could end up with a major infestation in your home and yard. The first thing you need to do is schedule your pest control appointment. You need to have a fresh application of pesticide at the start of each new season. After all, different pests come out at different times throughout the year. In addition to the pest control service, here are four steps you can take to keep pests away this spring.

1. Change Your Porch Lights

If you have standard light bulbs in your porch lights, you're inviting an infestation. Pests are attracted to bright lights, which means your standard porch lights are like a welcome sign to them. You can reduce the number of pests that approach your home by switching to pest-proof light bulbs. Most often, they're the yellow light bulbs you find in the store. The lights provide the security you need for your porch without inviting pest activity.

2. Wash Your Garbage Cans

If you don't keep your garbage cans clean, you need to start. The odors and organic material that linger in your garbage cans will attract pests in large numbers. The best way to stop that is to wash your garbage cans several times a year. Since your garbage cans have sat out in the cold weather all winter long, spring is an excellent time to give them a thorough cleaning. Don't forget to clean both your inside and outside trash cans. It's also a good idea to clean the area around your trash cans as well, especially the outside storage area.

3. Sweep Your Patios

If you're like most people, you don't use your patios much during the winter months. That means you'll have an accumulation of dirt, debris and cobwebs on your patios come spring. Unfortunately, all that winter accumulation will be the perfect breeding ground for a wide variety of pests. Before you start using your patios again in the spring, be sure to give them a thorough cleaning. Begin by sweeping along the edges to remove dirt and webs that might be hiding there.

4. Clear the Debris From Your Yard

If you've ignored your yard all winter long, clear the debris away once the weather warms up. You'll need to remove all the debris that pests will use for hiding spaces once spring arrives. Pay close attention to the space around the foundation of your home, and to your gutters. Those are the areas where pests will be the most active.
