The Pros And Cons Of Choosing Live Rat Traps

by Lance Burke

If you have rats in your home, then obviously you are going to need to call an exterminator or go about trying to remove the rats on your own. Regardless of which approach you take, you have another decision to make: should you use live traps? Live traps are quite popular among homeowners, but they are not the right choice for every situation. Take a look at these pros and cons of live rat traps before you pick the traps you'll use.

Pro: They're more humane.

It's hard to argue with the fact that live traps are more humane than kill traps. As annoying as you may find rats, they do have a place in the food web and a place in the natural ecosystem. If it's important to you to protect the rats, then live traps allow you to relocate the animals rather than simply killing them.

Con: You'll have to figure out how to deal with a live rat.

When you do catch a rat in a live trap, the danger is not over. You then have to take the rat somewhere — preferably somewhere out in a rural area away from other homes — and drop it off. If you do not act with caution, there is a chance of being bitten by the rat or coming into contact with its droppings. This could expose you to diseases such as leptospirosis and salmonella.

Pro: You don't have to worry about deteriorating animal flesh.

With kill traps, if the temperature is hot outside and you don't quickly discover that you've caught a rat, is flesh may start rotting and exuding nasty odors. Insects may also be attracted to the dead rat. With a live trap, you obviously want to find and relocate the animal promptly, but as long as there's some water in the trap to keep the rat hydrated, you can leave it for a day or so without worry.

Con: Releasing live animals is not permitted everywhere.

Some municipalities and counties have laws against trapping and releasing live animals like rats. If this is the case in your area, then using a live trap is not a good option.

Talk to a rat exterminator to lean more about live traps. If you determine this is not a good choice for you, then your rat exterminator can help you set conventional traps that will kill rats when they are caught.
