Indoor Plants Giving You Fruit Flies? What You Can Do

by Lance Burke

With everyone becoming indoor gardeners these days or creating an indoor oasis with plants to keep you busy or just for a decorative look, they can end up luring fruit flies to their homes. Fruit flies are tiny gnats that will fly and buzz about your plants or come to bother you from time to time. These tiny bugs may end up in other areas of your home as well, such as around your drains. If you have fruit flies, you need to get rid of them before they are everywhere in your home. Read on for a few things you can do.

Spray Your Plants

Spray your plants with white vinegar or apple cider vinegar to kill the fruit flies and any other pests that may be in your indoor plants. Take a small spray bottle and mix one part vinegar with one part water and spritz your plants at least once per week. This is an all-natural way to get rid of these pests, and it won't harm your plants either. It's also non-toxic for humans and for your pets as well.

Use Planters With Drain Holes

Make sure the planters or vases you are using have drainage holes. The water that accumulates inside can not only end up killing your plants, but it can also create attract, fruit flies. Also, be sure to use drip pans beneath your planters and don't allow too much water to accumulate in these pans. If your planters don't have drainage holes, have them drilled into your planters for you.

Set Traps

You can also set traps to catch the fruit flies using a shallow cup of apple cider vinegar and a narrow opening at the top, such as the top of a 2-liter bottle of soda on top of the shallow container. These traps will lure the fruit flies in and will not allow them to escape. Once the trap is full, throw it away and set out a new one. Repeat this until you are rid of the fruit flies for good.

If you have fruit flies or gnats flying around your indoor plants, your plants are more than likely the reason why they're there in the first place. Take care of your plants and get rid of the fruit flies. Hire a professional pest control company to spray your home to get rid of the fruit flies for you. If they are in the drains of your home, or throughout your home, a pest control company has the know-how to get rid of them.
