Use These Tips to Keep Termites From Spreading Through Your Home

by Lance Burke

If you have noticed wood dust around your baseboards or underneath your couch, these are usually signs you have a termite infestation. As soon as these critters invade your home and begin to feed on your furniture and foundation, it can be incredibly difficult to eliminate them. Therefore, it is important to inspect your home regularly to check for their presence. If you have found any trace of termites living in your home, you need to take action immediately to prevent their spread and completely get rid of them. Keep reading to learn more.

Eliminate Moisture and Repair Leaks

Moisture is the main thing that attracts termites to your home, along with other pests. Therefore, if you spot these pests, you need to eliminate excess moisture from the home. If your environment is humid, a dehumidifier can be beneficial. If there are any leaks in the home, these need to be fixed immediately. This is particularly true in the basement, which is an area that termites will be attracted to first since it is closer to the ground.

Declutter the Home

You also need to remove all of the clutter from your home. You will want to pay extra attention to anything paper, such as old magazines, old newspapers, cardboard, unnecessary documents, etc., as this offers the perfect environment for termites to thrive. Make sure that you do not remove anything from one room that has been infested by termites to another room of the home.

Keep Soil and Wood Away from Each Other

If you take care of a garden outside, you will want to ensure that you keep the soil away from the home's foundation a bit. This will help discourage termites from attacking your home. Cement or stones can be used to help create a physical barrier between the soil and any wood.

Apply Borate on Wood Prior to Painting

Borate is a popular and effective termite repellent. It can be sprayed on wood before it is primed and painted. Borate will soak into the wood, helping to prevent termites from attacking the wood and eating it in the future. As soon as the borate has dried, you can continue priming and painting it as you would normally.

Put Termite-Infected Items Outside

If you find that you have items that are being infected and damaged by termites, put them outside in the direct sunlight for several days. Termites do not like the heat, and the heat can help kill them, remove the moisture from your wood, and prevent the chances of the termites infesting it again. Before you bring the item back inside, make sure that you dust it or shake it off really well and utilize a termite spray on it.
