Think You Have Termites? How To Determine You Do And How To Take Care Of This Problem

by Lance Burke

If you think you may have termites in your home, you need to determine if you do. Below is information about this so you can prevent a lot of damage termites can cause. You will also find information about how to get rid of the termites.

Signs of Termites

There are many signs you can look for to determine if you have termites in your home. Look at your walls to see if there is any peeling paint or if it looks like there is any water damage. Tap on walls to see if you hear a hollow sound. Your laminate floorboards can also buckle. If you have tile floors, you may notice some of your tiles are loose. Your windows may stick when you open them, or you may see a maze-like pattern on walls and floorboards.

Look outside for mounds of termite pellets, which will look like a pile of pepper or salt.  Look for mud tubes on your foundation, which look like tunnels made of soil. The termites get into your home through these tubes. There are some termites that can fly, so see if you see any of them while you are outside.

Take Care of This Problem

If you see any of the signs above, you should not try to get rid of the termites on your own. This is because they can cause a lot of structural damage very quickly if you have a lot of them. Instead, contact a pest control company to come to your home. They will make sure that you do have termites and then take steps to get them out.

The pest control company will use a pesticide to spray outside your home. The company will also set up a termite barrier treatment. This will prevent termites from getting into your home.

There are physical termite barriers they may use. With these, they put a layer of a thick and durable cloth under your home's slab to prevent termites from getting in.  They will overlap sheets of this barrier and seal them with adhesive and tape to prevent them from becoming loose.

There are also chemical barriers the pest control company may use. This is putting a liquid termiticide around the perimeter of your foundation. This will prevent the termites from forming their colonies and destroy any termites that may be there.

The termite company that you hire can give you many tips on preventing future termite problems. Contact a local termite control service to get started.
